Avila University

Avila University's rich history and mission are deeply rooted in the principles of the Sisters of St. Joseph, who arrived in the United States from France in the mid-1800s. Guided by their dedication to the "practice of all the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and which will most benefit the dear neighbor," Avila University has continued their tradition in its mission and values.

Avila students embody the spirit of compassion and service, volunteering over 140,000 service hours each year in their communities, across the country, and around the globe. Driven by their passion for making a difference, they embody the ideals of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

As a Catholic university founded and inspired by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Avila University provides undergraduate and graduate education in the liberal arts and professional studies. Our programs foster lifelong learners who make meaningful contributions to the global community.

Through our Catholic roots, Avila University offers an education experience that nurtures the development of the whole person. We teach our students to serve their neighbors without distinction and to love in a way that seeks to achieve unity with one another and with God.

The journey to becoming a modern institution of higher learning began in 1836, when the first Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet arrived in Missouri from France. This marked the beginning of a legacy that would span over 150 years, with significant milestones and transformations along the way.

In 1866, Mother Francis Joseph Ivory arrived in Kansas City to staff a small school that would eventually become St. Teresa's Academy. For over 25 years, St. Teresa's was the only Catholic school providing more than an elementary education for girls in Kansas City.

As the institution grew, so did its offerings. In 1916, the school became St. Teresa's College, a two-year college for women. The University of Missouri accredited the school just five years later, in 1921. The school's affiliation with St. Joseph Hospital's School of Nursing in 1930 added a professional emphasis that continues to this day at Avila.

Throughout the years, Avila has undergone significant transformations, including a name change to College of St. Teresa in 1940 and accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools in 1946. The 1960s brought a new era of growth, with the construction of a larger campus in South Kansas City and the adoption of the name Avila College.

The 1960s also saw the introduction of on-campus residence halls and the transition to full coeducation. Varsity athletics began in 1974, and the Mabee Fieldhouse, a modern indoor athletics center, opened in 1982. The university's official nickname was changed to the Eagles in 1990.

Today, Avila continues to grow as a Catholic university, offering faith and values-based academic excellence in the spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. We remain committed to our mission of serving and empowering students to make a positive impact in their communities and the world.
