University of Roehampton
<p>The University of Roehampton has a rich history dating back to 1841, when it was founded as Whitelands College, a training college for women teachers. This was followed by the establishment of Southlands College in 1872, a training college for women teachers, and Digby Stuart College in 1874, a training college for young women who wished to teach in Catholic schools. In 1892, the Froebel Educational Institute was opened in West Kensington.</p> <p>These colleges later federated to form the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education (RIHE) in 1975, which was approved by the Department of Education and Science in July of that year. By September 1975, the first students had enrolled. In 2000, Roehampton Institute entered a federation with the University of Surrey, becoming The University of Surrey Roehampton. This collaboration was short-lived, as the university was granted independent status by the Privy Council in 2004.</p> <p>In 2006, the university's research was recognized as one of the <strong>Top 100 World-Changing Discoveries</strong>. To commemorate its founding in 1841, Roehampton University marked 175 years of Whiteland's College in 2016.
